"Studying consciousness had been seen as mystical or unscientific"

Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of the DNA double helix, defined consciousness as the greatest unsolved problem in biology. The first major international conference of the Human Brain Project, held recently in Barcelona, has focused on the challenges and advances in its study. Jesús Méndez, of the scientific news agecy SINC, spoke with the local organiser of the conference, Mavi Sánchez Vives.

Several of the HBP's leading researchers and developers participated in the 3rd Annual BRAIN Initiative® Investigators Meeting 2016 on 12 - 14 December in Bethesda, USA. This event brought together a diverse crowd of US-based and international investigators from numerous brain science and technology research areas, US funding agencies, non-governmental organisations, members of the US Congress, patient groups and the public.
