Best Ideas and Concepts for Diversity in Research and Management

You are an early stage researcher with a scientific project that integrates aspects of sex, gender and/or further diversity traits. You want to present your novel approach to a broader audience.

The HBP will honour ideas to improve equal opportunities and concepts for integrating sex, gender and further diversity dimensions in research projects (see also H2020 Guidelines)

An internal jury will select the most outstanding and promising projects, which will be presented at the HBP Summit to a large scientific audience and representatives of the European Commission. Registration and travel expenses will be covered.

More information is available via the website Diversity and Gender Equality Activities or info@opencalls.humanbrainproject.eu.

Diversity and equality have been increasingly recognised as benefit for research and society. For complex tasks, a diverse team may achieve better outcomes than a homogenous group.

Gender and other diversity aspects are not only important for teamwork but can also be important elements in scientific research projects that might lead to additional insights and knowledge or far-reaching results. The importance of inclusion of diversity variables, like gender dimensions, in research projects, has been widely recognised, for example in the Horizon 2020 programme.

The HBP would like to increase the visibility of researchers at the beginning of their career, researchers who are interested in developing concepts for improving gender equality, including diversity, creating role models and best practices on improving equal opportunities.

This Call for Expression of Interest (CEoI) invites applications for the following categories in management and science:

1)    Best Ideas and Measures to improve equal opportunities in scientific research teams or in the overall HBP

The HBP will honour the best ideas and measures that focus on improving equal opportunities in various settings; we strive to implement these best practices in the HBP.

2)    Best Scientific Concepts that integrate diversity (concepts or existing projects or papers considering sex, gender, further intersectional variables like age, specific diseases etc.)

The HBP will honour research concepts for integrating sex, gender and further diversity dimensions in their research design (see also H2020 Guidelines).

More information is available via the website Diversity and Gender Equality Activities or info@opencalls.humanbrainproject.eu

The HBP Research Infrastructure Voucher Programme Call 2019

Download the Guide for Applicants:  The HBP Research Infrastructure Voucher Programme Call 2019 Guide for Applicants (doc.)

The Human Brain Project (HBP) is providing its expertise and skills to researchers and groups around the world through the HBP Research Infrastructure (RI) Voucher Programme.

The vouchers give researchers outside the Project access to the HBP infrastructure services and its engineers; with the help of the engineers, the voucher winners will be to implement new infrastructure capabilities to solve specific problems not covered by the current RI toolset. The focus is on projects that will be relevant for using and/or contributing to the further development of the HBP research infrastructure.

The aim is to open the HBP research infrastructure to meet the needs of the user community in a dynamic new way and to establish collaborations that pursue technology innovation and engineering solutions of mutual interest and benefit.

A call for applications for the RI Voucher Programme 2019 opened on 16 July 2019, with the first cut-off date on 27 September 2019 17:00 Brussels time (CET).

The call is open to all non-HBP researchers, with separate target groups from academic, non-academic and medical research (including hospitals), and industry and pharma (SMEs and companies).

For the HBP measures for equal opportunities are an important topic. Thus, we explicitly encourage applications from women and groups of applicants who have considered gender equality aspects in their group of applicants.

Important note: While benefiting from tailor-made developments and solutions for their projects, voucher winners will not receive any direct funding for their work from the HBP. The vouchers fund the work of the HBP infrastructure engineering teams to implement the RI features requested by the voucher winners.

The size of each voucher will depend on the personnel and travel costs required to realise the new RI capability sought by that voucher winner and to allow for intensive exchange between the participants. The vouchers are worth between 6 to 12 months of engineering/development time (maximum 12 person months), plus travel costs.

Interested applicants should get in contact with the HBP already during the application process to work together with the HBP Platform engineers concerned to refine their proposals.

Read more:  The HBP Research Infrastructure Voucher Programme Call 2019 Guide for Applicants (doc.)

If you have any questions, please contact us at vouchers@humanbrainproject.eu.

NOTE: Applicants will receive the final confirmation of project funding only, once the HBP SGA3 Proposal was accepted for funding by the European Commission.

Testing pathophysiological models of brain diseases - Medical Informatics Platform

(CEoI) is addressed to organisations interested in pathophysiological models of brain disease, in the field of Psychiatry or Neurology.

The objective of this CEoL is to develop a specific, hypothesis-driven use case, by testing the validity of one or more original, promising, elaborated pathophysiological models of brain disease(s) using MIP-driven analysis of large-scale clinical data. These models shall incorporate knowledge from one or more of the following fields: systems biology and systems neuroscience; neuroinformatics; computational neuroscience; and any other relevant contributing field. This knowledge might be provided by activities developed by other HBP Subprojects covering these various fields.

The model(s) might cover specific brain diseases or, alternatively, tackle mechanisms thought to operate across diseases, or challenge current classification of brain disorders. Applicants are encouraged to involve clinicians in the model validation, to strengthen its potential clinical impact.

The predictive models tested should prioritise the validation of potential clinically-relevant biomarkers, which could then be implemented in clinical practice.

This CEoI was open from 29 January 2018 and closed on 15 March 2018.

(EUR 850,000, including 25% of Indirect Costs)

Federated analysis of human intracerebral stimulation and recording data - Medical Informatics Platform

(CEoL) is addressed to organisations specialised in the fields of human intracerebral stimulation and recording data obtained during procedures of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for psychiatric or neurological diseases requiring such treatment (e.g. movement disorders), as well as during stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) investigations for epilepsy surgery.

The objective of this call is to recruit into the HBP a partner or group of partners which will develop and run an operational framework for federated analyses of human intracerebral stimulation and recording data, as well as integrating the results with computational modelling, neuroscience, brain atlasing, neuroinformatics, etc., in order to gain further insights into:

  • the relationship between the location of intracerebral electrodes and patients’ clinical outcomes
  • the pathophysiological mechanisms of the various conditions investigated or treated with intracerebral electrodes (e.g. epilepsy and movement disorders), as well as improved therapeutic perspectives
  • the physiology and functional role of the various brain structures investigated with intracerebral electrodes in human subjects
  • the relationship between electrophysiological measures, recommendations for surgery and patients’ post-surgery clinical outcomes.

The applicants should ensure that their study will not promote indications for DBS that raise ethical issues.

This CEoI was open from 29 January 2018 and closed on 15 March 2018.

(EUR 850,000, including 25% of Indirect Costs)

Comprehensive ontologies for brain diseases - Medical Informatics Platform

(CEoI) is addressed to organisations interested in Ontologies, in particular in the field of brain diseases. Ontologies represent the foundation of any project based on the collection and analysis of medical data. This applies even more particularly to the objectives of the Medical Informatics Platform (MIP), according to the heterogeneity, diversity and complexity of the hospital data made available through the MIP network. In this context, it is essential to establish a comprehensive set of ontologies that will allow leveraging of the research potential of the MIP.

The objective of the call is to develop a broad set of ontologies, covering a wide range of brain diseases and types of data. The development of these ontologies should take into account or be consistent with:

  • the structure of available hospital data
  • the general architecture of the MIP
  • existing, well accepted or recommended ontologies and common data elements, in particular those approved by scientific societies.

In addition, they should promote a transdisciplinary approach across current diseases classifications.

This CEoI was open from 29 January 2018 and closed on 15 March 2018.

(EUR 314,000, including 25% of Indirect Costs)
