Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) is a modern university medical centre for research, education and patient care with a high quality profile and a strong scientific orientation. LUMC has a unique research practice, ranging from pure fundamental medical research to applied clinical research. This enables LUMC to offer patient care and education that is in line with the latest international insights and standards. The more than 7000 staff members of the LUMC are passionate about improving patient care through scientific research. The Division of Image Processing (LKEB) is a research group within the Department of Radiology at LUMC, and has a strong track record in developing and publishing innovative biomedical image and data analysis algorithms, and transferring these to industry under strict software quality standards (e.g. companies such as Medis, GE, Toshiba, Agfa, Terumo, Lightlab, Volcano, Boston Scientific). In addition, we have experience with open-source code distribution, as evidenced by the LKEB-co-developed elastix platform for non- rigid image registration (> 25000 downloads). This way of working has resulted in several widely used clinical software packages, some of which have been recognized as de-facto standard in the field, in combination with a strong publication track record. LKEB’s collaboration with the Pattern Recognition and Bioinformatics group in Delft, embodied in the research team on mining the Allen Brain Atlas, gives access to state-of-the-art pattern analysis and bioinformatics expertise, while its position within the Leiden University Medical Centre connects LKEB to state-of-the-art neuroscience research.

Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) was originally founded in 1920 under the name "Athens School of Commercial Studies". In 1989 it assumed its present name, the Athens University of Economics and Business. It is composed of 8 academic Departments in the areas of Economics, International and European Economics, Business Administration, Marketing and Communication, Accounting and Finance, Management Science and Technology, Informatics, and Statistics.

It is the third oldest University in Greece and the oldest one in the general fields of Economics and Business. AUEB is a State University under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. Its main decision-making bodies are the following:

  • The University Senate,
  • The Rector's Council, and
  • The Rector.

The Research Centre was established in 1983, as part of the Athens University of Economics and Business, in order to coordinate and facilitate research by members of the University's faculty. In this capacity, the Centre is collaborating with other university institutions, public entities and organisations, private enterprises, international organisations and selected qualified individuals. The Research Centre is a non-profit organisation governed by an executive board formed exclusively by members of the University's faculty. One of the University's Vice-Rectors is appointed by the Senate as Chairman. The University's Departments appoint to the Board one member each. The Board is assisted by an Administrative Secretary who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Centre.

The Centre is devoted to the promotion of theoretical, applied and policy research in the fields of economics and management as well as of informatics and applied information systems. The Centre finances its activities by administering research and training projects which are funded by both public and private organisations, as well as by international organisations, such as the European Commission. It also receives research grants from the government and the University itself.

Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputacion

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Centro Nacional de Supercomputación, BSC-CNS), was established in 2005 and serves as Spain's National Supercomputing Facility. The Center hosts and operates MareNostrum, the most powerful supercomputer in Spain. Currently headed by Mateo Valero, the BSC is a consortium that includes the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitivity, the Department of Economy and Knowledge of Catalunya and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). BSC-CNS's mission is to develop and manage cutting-edge information technology tools for scientific research. To further these goals, the BSC-CNS has brought together a group of over 250 Spanish and more than 100 international researchers. In 2011, the Center won recognition as a "Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence" for its major contributions in the area of computing and applications.

The Bloomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem was established in 1992 and is a recognized cultural institute of informal education and a center for scientific communication. The museum is a registered independent non-profit association operating under the joint auspices of the Hebrew University and the Jerusalem Foundation. It attracts visitors from every sector and every walk of life, and each year it provides educational programs and activities for more than 250,000  visitors among themmore than 60,000 students from throughout the country.

The museum's aims:

CINECA, established in 1969, is a non-profit consortium of 67 Italian Universities, the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), the National Research Council (CNR), and the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR).

CINECA is the national supercomputing facility, one of the largest in Europe; its HPC infrastructure is equipped with cutting-edge technology and it offers highly-qualified personnel which cooperates with researchers and customers for the most effective exploitation of the HPC systems, in both the academic and industrial fields.

SCAI (SuperComputing Applications and Innovation) is the CINECA High Performance Computing department. The mission of SCAI is to accelerate the scientific discovery by providing high performance computing resources, data management and storage systems and tools and HPC services and expertise at large, aiming to develop and promote technical and scientific services related to high-performance computing for the Italian and European research community.

The current HPC infrastructure offers an IBM BG/Q, FERMI, (10 Frames, 163840 cores with 1GB RAM per core and a peak performance of 2 PFlop/s) ranked 12 in June 2013 Top500) and a PLX hybrid cluster Linux (3288 cores Intel Westmere with 14 TB RAM and 548 GPUs nVIDIA m2070 with a peak performance of 293 TFlop/s).

The SCAI staff offers support and consultancy in HPC tools and techniques and in several scientific domains, such as physics, particle physics, material sciences, chemistry. The staff has a long experience in cooperating with the researchers in parallelizing, enabling and scaling up their applications in different computational disciplines, covering condensed matter physics, astrophysics, geophysics, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics and bioinformatics, but also "non-traditional" ones, such as biomedicine, archaeology and data-mining.

The Danish Board of Technology Foundation (DBT) is located in the center of Copenhagen and is the parliamentary technology assessment institution of Denmark. It specialises in interactive methodologies, involving trans disciplinary research, stakeholder involvement, citizen participation, political deliberation and advice, and public communication. The DBT is working under the subproject SP12 ‘Ethics and Society' of the Human Brain Project. 

The DBT is coordinator and initiator of the global citizen participation projects World Wide Views, which in 2009 involved citizen meetings in 38 countries on Global Warming and in 2012 citizen meetings in 25 countries on Biodiversity.

Scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich's Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine (INM) contribute fundamental neurobiological information that will serve as a spatial reference system for the human brain. Furthermore, INM scientists work on the interface between neuroscience and simulation technology, investigating large-scale neural networks, and on methods for the analysis of multi-channel activity data from experiments.

The Champalimaud Foundation (CF), based in Lisbon, Portugal, is an international organisation that aims to stimulate novel theoretical and practical methodologies by utilising the experience of both research scientists and medical practitioners. The foundation supports individual researchers and research teams working at the cutting edge of biomedical science. By supporting these active research programmes, The Champalimaud Foundation intends to stimulate further clinical research, particularly in the non-profit sector. By doing so, the Foundation aspires to make a significant contribution to reducing the global burden of illness and disease. The Champalimaud Neuroscience Programme (CNP) was created in 2007 through a collaborative agreement between the Champalimaud Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It is a basic-research team with the broad aim of understanding brain function through integrative biological approaches. CNP laboratories apply advanced molecular, physiological and imaging techniques to elucidate the function of neural circuits and systems in animal models that include Drosophila, mouse, rat and zebrafish. The CNP is based at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (CCU). The CCU is a multidisciplinary centre for neuroscience and translational cancer research and clinical practice. The Centre contains state-of-the-art facilities for basic and clinical research that hold cutting edge technological tools and equipment. The CNP also organises the International Neuroscience Doctoral Programme. In this programme students are provided with a broad educational background through both formal classes and hands-on experience in basic topics of contemporary neuroscience such as cellular and synaptic physiology, sensation and action and cognitive neuroscience. Quantitative approaches are emphasised and students also receive background courses in mathematics and programming.

Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf was founded in 1965. It has five faculties and more than 20,000 students. It is home to the C. and O. Vogt Institute of Brain Research and the Institute of Clinical Neuroscience and Medical Psychology. The Vogt Institute is one of the major German centres of neuroscience, housing 200,000 histological brain sections collected by the Vogts and other unique collections, including brains of humans, great apes and non-human primates and other mammals. The JuBrain atlas, a cytoarchitectonic probabilistic atlas of brain areas, developed together with partners at Jülich, is based on this collection. The Institute of Clinical Neuroscience and Medical Psychology uses a translational approach to understand brain structure, function and connectivity through MRI and electrophysiological methods.

Helsingin yliopisto

The University of Helsinki is an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. It was founded in 1640 and operates on four campuses in Helsinki and at 17 other locations. Within the Neuroscience Centre, two research groups are participating in the HBP. Matias Palva’s group performs non-invasive brain imaging and stimulation experiments with healthy subjects and select patient groups as well as invasive stereo-encephalography recordings through collaboration projects. The group also develops data analysis and informatics methods and uses first-person video games as key tools in next-generation human brain research. Satu Palva’s group investigates the system-level neuronal mechanisms underlying perception, attention, and memory, as well as the mechanisms that lead to short- and long-term variability in the behavioural performance in these functions. The group uses magneto- and electroencephalography (MEG/EEG) to non-invasively record neuronal activity during cognitive tasks, neuroinformatics-oriented data-driven analysis approaches to identify local and large-scale cortical networks of neuronal interactions that beget momentary task performance, and rhythmic transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to entrain or disengage these MEG/EEG targeted cortical processes.

HITS gGmbH

The Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) is a private, non-profit research institute of the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

It concentrates on basic research in data-driven fields, with huge amounts of data to be processed and structured. HITS currently comprises ten interdisciplinary research groups from various fields of life sciences, mathematics, scientific databases, and astrophysics. The research groups in the life science fields use mathematical methods and computer simulations to deal with biological and medical topics from areas like theoretical biochemistry and molecular biomechanics. One objective of the institute is to raise awareness among the general public about the importance of the so-called 4th Paradigm of scientific endeavor, Data-Driven Science. More than 100 researchers from 20 countries work at HITS.

The Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV: «Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois ») is one of the five university hospitals in Switzerland. The CHUV counts about 9'300 collaborators from 114 different nationalities. More than 45'000 patients/year are hospitalized and more than 2'800 daily patients are welcomed for management in an outpatient setting.

The CHUV provides a wide range of health services across a broad range of specialties. Cardio-vascular issues together with oncology, neuroscience, bioengineering and immunology have been identified among a number of priority areas in which the CHUV is actively acting to promote health, teaching and research.

The ICM Brain and Spine Institute is a one-of-a-kind, international center for scientific excellence that adopts a transversal, multidisciplinary approach to responding to the pressing public health challenges posed by diseases and disorders of the brain and spinal cord. The Institute's objective is to promote the rapid discovery of treatments for conditions of the central nervous system and to make them available to patients as quickly as possible.

The ICM is located at the heart of La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris – the birthplace of modern Neurology.  Its unique model of governance relies on international partnerships across the public, private and academic sectors, an excellency-based recruitment process, collaboration with industry actors, and an emphasis on the clinical application of research findings.

The ICM is part of a global network that brings together the world's most reputable centers for Neuroscience to lead joint research programs.

The Institute's team works daily to prevent and treat neurological diseases and disorders, from repairing injury by rebuilding neuronal circuits to diminishing or eliminating memory loss, language difficulties, pain, anxiety, depression, etc.

The ICM's revolutionary approach enables its various research teams to work both independently and interconnectedly in the framework of interdisciplinary research programs. This encourages scientific creativity, effective communication and the crucial pooling of skills. Indeed, the ICM building was conceived by architect, Jean-Michel Wilmotte, to facilitate such collaboration.

The Institute is also unique in that it regroups patients, doctors, and researchers together in one place, shortening the time it takes to transform basic research findings into applicable new therapies, to the patients' greatest benefit.

Institute of Experimental Medicine, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (in Hungarian: Magyar Tudományos Akadémia Kísérleti Orvostudományi Kutatóintézet)

The Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), established in 1952, is still the only research institution in Hungary dedicated exclusively to medical research. Its activity focuses on basic biomedical research, primarily in the field of neuroscience, including studies on neurotransmission, learning and memory, development, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, aggressive behaviour, ischaemic and epileptic brain damage, neurodegenerative disorders and the central and peripheral control of hormone secretion.

The research teams of the IEM employ multidisciplinary approaches: traditional, well-established methodologies (e.g. anatomy, electrophysiology, neurochemistry and pharmacology) are combined with novel approaches in cellular and molecular biology such as the use of transgenic animals and optogenetics, as well as with patch clamp, 2-photon microscopy and calcium imaging techniques. The Institute encourages international mobility of researchers, hosting 5-6 foreign scientists per year, and a similar number of IEM researchers visit leading laboratories in the world. Local and foreign funding enables the Institute to maintain a leading position in the international mainstream of neuroscience research.

The IEM has been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training as part of a close collaboration with 3 universities in Budapest: the Semmelweis University Faculty of Medicine has a joint PhD School with the IEM, the Pázmány Péter Catholic University has its Neuroscience Department in the IEM, and the Eötvös Loránd University conducts joint undergraduate and postgraduate training courses with the institute. The IEM extensively participates in science communication to the general public, as well as in the formation of advisory and lobby organizations to influence governmental science policy in Hungary.

In the year 2000, the IEM was ranked second from 260 candidates in a competition for the title "Centre of Excellence", and won this recognition for three years by the decision of independent experts of the European Commission.

Institute of Science and Technology Austria

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) is a multidisciplinary research institution dedicated to cutting-edge basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. The Institute is located in the city of Klosterneuburg, 18 km from the center of Vienna. The graduate school of IST Austria educates doctoral students from around the world. IST Austria was established jointly by the federal government of Austria and the provincial government of Lower Austria and inaugurated in 2009. At the end of 2013, 28 professors and a total of 373 employees from 51 different countries worked on campus. The development plans of IST Austria allow for a growth to 90 research groups and more than 1000 employees by 2026, who will conduct research in an international, state-of-the-art environment. The first President of the Institute is Thomas A. Henzinger, a computer scientist and former professor of the University of California at Berkeley and the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The Institute was founded in 1949 at a time when scientific research was expanding rapidly throughout the world. After more than 60 years of scientific achievement, the Institute has become part of the image of Slovenia. The Department of Knowledge Technologies performs research in advanced information technologies aimed at acquiring, storing and managing knowledge to be used in the development of knowledge-based applications. Established areas include intelligent data analysis (machine learning, data mining, and knowledge discovery in databases), semantic data mining and the semantic web, language technologies and computational linguistics, decision support and knowledge management. Apart from research in knowledge technologies, we are also developing applications in environmental sciences and ecology, medicine and health care, biomedicine and bioinformatics, economy and marketing.

SCC developed and runs the largest German university cloud storage for sync-and-share, providing access to more than 350,000 students and 100,000 researchers. SCC provides 22 PB disk (+22 PB tape) storage to a diverse range of scientific experiments hosted at more than 130 institutes on site. 
 
SCC successfully participated in several European projects such as CrossGrid, Int.EU.grid, EUFORIA, EGEE-1, EGEE-2 and EGEE-3, EGI-Inspire and is currently contributing to EUDAT. SCC has coordinated the G-Eclipse project and currently coordinates MMM@HPC.  Furthermore, SCC is founding member of the OpenCirrus Cloud Initiative.

Prof. Jeanette Hellgren- Kotaleski's group uses computational modelling to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying information processing, rhythm generation and learning in motor systems, using basal ganglia as a model system. Methods used by the group range from simulations of large scale neural networks, using biophysically detailed and abstract systems-level models, down to kinetic models of subcellular processes. The Center for Parallel Computers (PDC), the leading centre for high-performance computing for the Swedish academic community, is also located at KTH. PDC provides high- performance computing resources to the Stockholm Brain Institute (Karolinska Institutet), Stockholm University, and KTH, and has a capacity of up to about 500TF.

The BioRobotics Institute of SSSA (www.bioroboticsinstitute.it) has been started in 2011, by merging the ARTS and the CRIM Labs and the EZ Research Centre, with their 20-year history. The BioRobotics Institute conducts theoretical and experimental research on robotics and biomedical engineering, along with applied research and technological innovation, particularly in the biomedical field. Given their interdisciplinarity, the BioRobotics Institute has a strong tendency toward integrating heterogeneous bodies of knowledge. The former ARTS Lab, over the course of its 20-year history, has built and consolidated a vast wealth of knowledge and expertise in the fields of Service Robotics, Humanoid Robotics, NeuroRobotics, Neurodevelopmental Bioengineering, Bionics, Neural Interfaces, Assistive Robotics, Robotics for Neurorehabilitation, Biomimetic Robotics, Soft Robotics and Marine Robotics, as well as the former CRIM Lab had become a reference at international level for microfabrication technologies and for microrobotics applied in the medical field.


Joint Laboratories, especially in Tuscany and on the National territory, are aimed at promoting application and technology transfer. The Biorobotics Institute is located at the "Polo Sant'Anna Valdera", in Pontedera, a town close to Pisa. This is a research park, specifically created to favour technological innovation, with a surface of 6,300 square metres and important facilities for design and (micro)fabrication.


At present, the Biorobotics Institute includes around 200 people, among which 5 Full Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 8 Assistant Professors, more than 40 Post-Doc researchers, more than 90 PhD students, 6 technical and 8 administrative assistants, 15 other research assistants, a variable number of master students around 10, and a variable number of visiting researchers.

Every department at FZI operates under a certified quality management system according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2008. Departments working on medical information technologies are also certified according to DIN EN ISO 13485:2010. FZI has its head office in Karlsruhe and a branch office in Berlin.

The CNR seeks to understand the mechanisms of neural development, injury and repair. The CNR is leading the way towards improving our understanding of the fundamental biological processes underlying neuropathological conditions. The main goal of the Grant laboratory, based at the University of Edinburgh, is to understand molecular events at the synapse; specifically the multiprotein machines mechanisms underlying behaviour and cognition and identify their involvement in disease. The research has focused on the study of genes and proteins that control the synapses between nerve cells. Multiprotein machines comprising many different protein components are responsible for basic innate and learned behaviours and dysfunction in many brain diseases. Recent work shows that these mechanisms are conserved between mice and humans opening new avenues for diagnosis and therapeutic discoveries. The Genes to Cognition research team (www.genes2cognition.org) has generated a large amount of data and tools that are freely available and an education and public understanding website (www.G2COnline.org). Work published by the Grant laboratory revealed the evolution of the synapse and uncovered a new model for the evolutionary origins of the brain and how it evolved the complexity found in humans and other animals. Within the HBP the Grant laboratory will focus on obtaining a first draft of the full set of proteins expressed in neurons and synapses.

Within the Department of Physiology, the Senn Lab uses mathematical models of synapses, neurons and networks to explain aspects of perception and behavior. It particularly focuses on models of cortical pyramidal neurons and microcircuits that have been investigated experimentally in vivo and in vitro. Other research at the lab focuses on the neuronal substrate for learning and memory and the way the brain learns action sequences from an on-going stream of sensory inputs and a delayed feedback signal. The lab has developed models of sensory processing and its interaction with cortical top-down signals which can explain experimental recordings from the visual cortex, obtained during perceptual or classification tasks. These models highlight key mechanisms by which synapses and neurons enable our brains to deal with learning and memory.

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is the largest hospital in Hamburg. Each year the medical centre treats approximately 50,000 inpatients, 250,000 outpatients, and 50,000 emergency patients. As a university hospital, UKE offers patients a complete range of treatment options while implementing new research ideas and approaches for the diagnosis and therapy of diseases. The range of medical care extends from overall diagnostic services to highly specialized and complex treatments necessary for uncommon diseases. Work in the Department of Neurophysiology and Pathophysiology (led by Prof. Andreas K. Engel) focuses on cognitive and sensorimotor functions, which are studied in humans and animal models using neurophysiological and neuroimaging techniques. The group is addressing the neural mechanisms underlying perceptual integration, sensorimotor integration, multisensory interactions, attentional control, response selection, perceptual decision making, agency, social cognition and awareness. Further topics of interest include the role of synchrony in sensorimotor transformations (which convert signals from various sensory modalities into motor commands), establishing links between synchrony and perceptual states, cross-species comparison of synchronization phenomena, and the study of synchronization mechanisms (carried out via recordings in transgenic mice). To understand the mechanisms of cross-modal binding, the group has developed computational models of networks of coupled oscillators. Research of the group also focuses on the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia and autism. Another key aim of the group is interdisciplinary work linking neurophysiology, neuroimaging and technical applications (neuroprosthetics, brain-computer-interfaces, neurorobotics).

The European Brain Research Institute (EBRI) is a non-profit International Research Institute fully devoted to the study of Neuroscience. Founded in 2005 by the Nobel Laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini as an Interdisciplinary Research Centre, it was designed to spearhead Italian neuroscience investigating fundamental questions of the development and functional organization of the brain, and to show case translational neuroscience with tangible output and patient benefit.


In particular, using a multidisciplinary approach and a varieties of different techniques ranging from genetic and molecular biology to neurophysiology, computational analysis, and quantitative analysis of behavior, EBRI aims at investigating the biological basis of the higher functions of the vertebrate brain in both physiological and pathological conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases and other neurological disorders including epilepsy and autism.


EBRI is part of the Neuroscience campus enveloping Fondazione Santa Lucia, the Cell Biology and Neurobiology Institute (CNR), and two Telethon groups. It currently provides flourishing environment to seven research groups whose scientific interest and endeavors encompass development of recombinant antibodies, synaptic transmission and plasticity, neurotrophin factors neurodegenerative disease, metabolism in brain disease, stem cells and adult neurogenesis. The EBRI core staff comprises 60 people,  including scientists, technicians, and administrative personnel, and is organized in independent laboratories, units, as well as core facilities.
Despite its young age, EBRI has already been able to secure a number of very competitive research grants from the EC (ERC, Cooperation, Marie Curie), the American Alzheimer’s Association, the Italian Minister of Health. Recently EBRI was included in the EU project PAINCAGE (involving nine partners from six European countries) whose aim is to identify new therapeutic targets for chronic pain.

Maastricht University's research portfolio continues to attract national and international top researchers. UM can easily call itself the most international university in the Netherlands as almost 45% of its students and more than 30% of the teaching staff come from abroad. Most of UM's programmes are taught in English and European and international themes are deeply rooted in research and education.
